There is the St. Louis Arch at 630ft; The Washington Monument at 555ft; then the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial 352ft.
Speweik Preservation Consultants, Inc., (SPC) was privileged to be commissioned to provide on-site quality control, masons training, and inspection services for the National Park Service on the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial last summer. The monument is 47ft.taller than the Statue of Liberty and is located in Put-In-Bay, Ohio on South Bass Island in Lake Erie.
The project involved removing all sealant from between the granite joints and replacing the joints with mortar. Over 4 miles of joints were repointed with a high-lime Type N mortar. Specialized tools were fabricated by SPC in order to facilitate good workmanship and efficient production. The joints were repointed in three (3) lifts. The mortar mix design was carefully prepared with the minimum amount of water to ensure excellent compaction and to keep the shrinkage cracks to a minimum as the mortar cured. The most challenging aspect of the project was removing all the sealant from each joint. The high winds on the island were also a factor in delaying the project. It took five months to repoint the column. Coon Restoration provided the contracting service. WJE was the architect.
